SEÑORITA CINEMA 2022
Houston’s ALL LATINA film festival returns! Founded and organized by Houston mediamaker and curator Stephanie Saint Sanchez, Señorita Cinema celebrates the diversity of visions unique to the Latina experience and the rising wave of independent Latina-made movies and video art. Aurora Picture Show proudly sponsors the festival and hosts three of this year’s programs, listed below. More festival information at: www.senoritacinema.com. Señorita Cinema is made possible by a grant from the BIPOC Arts Network and Fund.

Saturday, Sept. 10 (5-6:45pm)
Filmmaking Workshop with Iris Almaraz
Pay what you can
Fabulous visiting filmmaker Iris Almarez leads this crash course on the creative, logistic, and technical processes of low-budget, independent filmmaking using accessible technology (smartphone or home computer with apps). Based in East L.A., Almarez is a fiercely independent filmmaker known for her feature Delusions of Grandeur and the irreverent short film Bloody Maria which has its Houston premiere in the festival. She is also the Festival Director of L.I.F.E (Latina Independent Film Extravaganza).

Saturday, Sept. 10 (Mini-Mercado opens at 7pm / Screening at 8pm)
Super Shorts + Mini Mercado
$10 / Free for Aurora Members
The festival’s popular, annual mini-movie mixtape, Super Shorts features a selection of new Latina-made short films from all over. Doors open for a reception and local mini-mercado at 7pm before the screening begins at 8pm, so come early!

Sunday, Sept 11 (1pm)
Community Concha Matinee: On The Divide
$10 / Free for Aurora Members
Señorita Cinema’s “Community Concha” matinee screening serves up the new feature film On The Divide. The film follows the story of three Latinx people living in McAllen, Texas who, despite their views, are connected by the most unlikely places: the last abortion clinic on the U.S./Mexico border. As threats to the clinic and their personal safety mount, these three are forced to make decisions they never could have imagined. Snacks and beverages will be available at the screening, and a portion of the proceeds of this evening’s proceeds will be donated to a local, female-benefiting community organization.
