CRAFT SOCIAL: THE GIF

Join Aurora at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft's monthly night of exploring craft over conversation and refreshments. This month’s Craft Social focuses on GIFs–the popular format for internet animations. HCCC’s Kathryn Hall, curator of the current exhibition Light Charmer, will discuss how GIF’s relate to the neon work of Kate Hush. Houston animator and Aurora Picture Show instructor Dave Merson Hess will illuminate the roots and history of the animated GIF, from Victorian optical toys to today’s moving memes. Aurora Picture Show will also host a station where attendees can create their own animated GIFs, which will then be shown at the upcoming outdoor film screening in HCCC’s Craft Garden on April 18. 

About Dave Merson Hess

Dave Merson Hess is a Houston-based animator, designer, and educator. He has directed award-winning animated short films and music videos, started the animation festival Rush Process, and teaches youth animation workshops with media arts organization Aurora Picture Show.

Aurora Picture Show is a non-profit media arts organization dedicated to expanding the cinematic experience and promoting the understanding and appreciation of moving image art. Aurora presents artist-made, non-traditional film, video, and interdisciplinary works year-round. 

About Craft Social

Craft Social takes place on the third Thursday evening of each month at HCCC, and is a fun way for adults to explore contemporary craft through other disciplines and media. These casual, social events emphasize experimentation, curiosity, and innovation. Visitors are encouraged to drop by and participate. All events are free and on a first-come first-served basis. Capacity is limited.
