The Aurora Award honors Doug Aitken

The 2009 Aurora Award will honor acclaimed media artist Doug Aitken on October 7th in a privately-owned gallery space which houses world-class contemporary art. The annual fundraiser dinner will feature a screening of his best known work, sleepwalkers, that was featured at the Museum of Modern Art and includes actors Donald Sutherland and Tilda Swinton, as well as migration.

Aitken has had numerous screenings, solo and group exhibitions around the world including the 1999 Venice Biennale, where he won the International Prize for his acclaimed installation electric earth. He has exhibited work in institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Pompidou Center in Paris.



The Aurora Award is presented annually to an artist or collective that has demonstrated extraordinary talent and originality in the field of media arts. Previous honorees include Steina and Woody Vasulka, Tony Oursler, William Wegman, Laurie Anderson, the Ant Farm collective, Isaac Julien and Miranda July.

This year’s Gala will take place Wednesday, October 7, at 6:30 p.m. at The Enclave, a privately owned space for world-class contemporary art, located at 2518 Mandell Street. The event is chaired by Karen and Stephan Farber.   Doug Aitken will also be on hand to receive the award designed by Houston artist,
