North Star: Mark di Suvero
Co-presented with the Menil Collection
Friday, October 5, 7:30PM
Location: The Menil Collection Park, Sul Ross at Mulberry
Directed by Francois de Menil, written by art historian Barbara Rose, and with an original musical score by Philip Glass, North Star: Mark di Suvero has been newly re-digitized and will be screened outdoors in Menil Collection Park. First released in 1977, this feature-length documentary is an illuminating portrait of Mark di Suvero. One of the most important sculptors of the Twentieth Century, the artist is renowned for his formal orchestration of steel and found industrial material. The film consists of biographical interviews and discussions with the artist about his relationship to the tumultuous political moments in the United States, interlaced with shots of the installation and construction of his sculptural work.
Presented in partnership with the Menil Collection, the film will be screened in Menil Park near the di Suvero sculpture Bygones (1976), which is featured on “Voices of the Menil,” the museum’s new Cell Phone Audio Walk. In addition to the feature, the program will start with short films from the early 1960's by the late Texas artist Roy Fridge.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics for a screening under the stars. Parking available in the Menil lots along West Alabama and street parking as available.
Located in Houston’s Museum District, the Menil Collection campus is anchored by Renzo Piano’s first American building. This landmark structure houses one of the world’s great (and growing) art collections. Here ever-changing exhibitions range from antiquities to modern and contemporary art. Throughout the year the Menil Collection also presents a full calendar of public programs and events, which Aurora is proud to be a partner in these programs.
