Menil Movies

  • Outdoors in the Menil Park 1515 Sul Ross Street Houston, TX, 77006 United States (map)

Join us for the inaugural Menil Movies screening, a new bi-annual educational series that highlights rarely seen films and videos from The Menil Archives. The series is hosted by Aurora Picture Show founder Andrea Grover, and was created to introduce audiences to the range and abundance of the museum’s moving image holdings, including filmic art, documentaries, informational videos, avant-garde film, animation, Soviet cinema, Surrealist and DADA films, and documentary footage of artists and curators affiliated with the museum. Each movie will be introduced with an explanation of its significance to contemporary art and film history, biographical information on the filmmaker or artist, and a summary of the larger film or art movement to which his or her work is attributed. Question and answer sessions will take place at the end of each screening. Titles include: The Surreal Eye: Max Ernst; Kinetic Cosmos: Jean Tinguely; Marcel Duchamp In His Own Words; Who is The Monster… You or Me?; Video 50 von Robert Wilson; Man Ray; as well as audio excerpts from talks by John and Dominique de Menil, and R. Buckminster Fuller.

Special thanks to Houston Young Professionals for the Arts (HYPA), Barefoot Wines, Stockholm Vodka and Whole Foods Market for their support of this night's members-only event.
