The non-profit arts groups of the Menil Campus band together again to showcase the many performances, workshops and exhibits they offer in an all-day festival, The Menil Community Arts Festival. At 12:30PM in the Aurora Video Library (1524 Sul Ross), Aurora will present a free video salon with HSPVA Media Arts instructor David Waddell. This free artist talk is family-friendly and will explore the basics of digital animation. Families and youth interested in learning more about creating their own films are encouraged to attend.
In addition from 11-4PM, Aurora will host a screening of Punto y Raya, a Spanish festival of short films that go back to basics and explore the creative possibilities of dots and lines as ends in themselves, a reflection upon the essence of form and movement. This screening will take place in Richmond Hall (1500 Richmond Ave.), home of Dan Flavin’s installation. A brief intermission will take place at 2PM for a screening of "Scratch-a-topia" by the Southwest Alternate Media Project, showcasing scratched 16mm films.
The Menil Community Arts Festival will feature the exhibitions, performances and workshops of arts organizations that are based on the Menil Campus. These organizations include The Menil Collection, Watercolor Arts Society Houston, Writers in the Schools, InPrint, Da Camera, The Rothko Chapel, TALA, SWAMP, Menil Bookstore and Bayou City Arts Festival. David Waddell is a multimedia artist working with collage, stop-motion animation, and installation. He is currently a resident at Lawndale Art Center and the Director of Media Studies at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.He received his MFA in painting from American University and his BFA in Art at the University of Texas at Austin
Punto Y Raya Film Festival has earned the title of “most abstract in the world”, explores the creative possibilities of dots and lines in various spheres of science, art and thought.
