KATHERINE BAUER: TRANSMISSIONS IN SILVER
Artist Katherine Bauer in attendance
Arts & Culture Lab - 5301 Polk St., Building 18a, Houston, TX 77023
Free Admission
Aurora in collaboration with Arts & Culture Lab presents an expanded cinema performance by artist Katherine Bauer involving multiple 16mm film projections and live photographic exposures. Bauer’s work invokes folklore told through obsolete technologies. In her mythologized landscapes of tungsten mines and extraterrestrial terrain, everything is in flux. Herds of cattle traverse borderlands, electric sheep cross barbwire, plant roots and amoebae migrate, mycelial lines travel along factory pipes underground. Found and original films that are hand-processed, re-printed, solarized, and soaked are accompanied by Bauer’s live performance. Using a developer made from local opportunistic plants and directly applying it on the silver screen, the artist slowly exposes objects salvaged around Houston and its industries. Through the performance, Bauer’s birth city of Houston–with its ties to space exploration, mining the land as well as both human and animal migrations–comes in dialogue with the artist’s folklore. The performance will be followed by an artist talk.
