Junkyard Drive-In: Texas Oil on Film
Saturday, February 28, 6-8pm (screening at 6:30pm)
Location: 723 N. Drennan Street (next door to Houston Biodiesel)
Free Admission
Co-presented by the University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, and Aurora Picture Show, in conjunction with the Center for Land Use Interpretation exhibition “Texas Oil: Landscape of an Industry” at Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston.
The Center for Land Use Interpretation and Aurora present a drive-in screening of informational and popular films on the subject of oil, at the site of a former auto junkyard on Buffalo Bayou. Pack your tailgate picnic, or buy dinner from the mobile taco stand, and then tune in your car radio to learn about the industry that makes Texas tick.
These films and videos, from a variety of sources, include promotional films that show the diversity and complexity of products and engineering in the petroleum industry, and its impact on our lives, culture, and economy. In addition there will be some short, older documentaries, including More Power to You (1930) and Frontiers of Friction (1962).
Junkyard Drive-In is part of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s new public art initiative, Confluence: Points of View on Buffalo Bayou, and organized in conjunction with Texas Oil: Landscape of an Industry, an exhibition of The Center for Land Use Interpretation, on view at Blaffer Gallery, January 17-March 29.
Special thanks to Saint Arnold Brewery and Whole Foods for their support of this event.
Supplies: Blankets, chairs, groovy car for movie screening
Parking: Drive in and park as directed. Attendees will view the film from personal vehicles with live radio. You may also bring a portable radio and choose to sit outside.
