We are pleased to join the Houston Cinema Arts Festival in hosting Kidlat Tahimik, “the father of the new Filipino cinema.” Aurora’s screening will be supplemented with a live performance and an installation by the director, both addressing the situation of Third World filmmakers vis-à-vis Hollywood. The Perfumed Nightmare tells the story of a Third World villager, Kidlat, who would like to experience the shimmering wonders of the First World and travel to even more distant worlds. As president of the local Werner von Braun fan club, Kidlat dreams of Cape Canaveral and plans to start his own space program.
The Perfumed Nightmare and Who Invented the Yoyo? Who Invented the Moon Buggy? (at She Works Flexible) were partly inspired by NASA, the Hollywood of space programs, and are part of the “CineSpace” series in this year’s festival (see http://hcaf15.org for more details).
