Aurora Picture Show presents a night of experimental short film animations curated by Houston filmmaker Kelly Sears on Saturday, August 18 at 8PM. This tour de force screening of experimental animations presents a range of works from pioneers of the craft to current practitioners who are inventing new visual languages. Each film offers a uniquely brilliant engagement with the frame-by-frame medium. The work in this screening celebrates playful and defiant visions that privilege visual risks over traditional story telling.
Most of the works from this screening will be projected on 16mm film. The program begins with the 1974 Academy Awarding winning animation by Frank Mouris and concludes with legendary animator Lillian Schwartz's film that must be viewed through Chroma Depth 3-D glasses.

Lillie Carré, Like a Lantern, 2012, 5:00
Like A Lantern is a poetic narrative centered on the state of extreme
ambivalence and a constant curiosity about a more exotic life. The
film was created using methods of cut-out replacement animation and
pressure printing on a Vandercook letterpress.

Kelly Sears is an animator and filmmaker living in Galveston, TX. She is a 2011-2012 artist in resident at the Galveston Artist Residency. Her work has been shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, MOMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Anthology Film Archives, RedCat Theater, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, and in galleries and film festivals internationally. She has curated
events through the Aurora Picture Show, Galveston Artist Residency, and Machine Project.
