An extension of CAMH’s long-running Slide Jam series, Video Jams explore the ideas and inspirations of a range of film/video artists in Houston’s diverse and ever-changing arts community. This summer, CAMH and the Aurora Picture Show co-present monthly gatherings, in which featured local artists will show and discuss recent film/video work, talk about their creative practices, and field questions from the audience. This event’s featured artists Prince Varughese Thomas and team Patrick Bresnan and Ivete Lucas will show and discuss recent film/video work, talk about their creative practices, and answer questions from the audience.
Prince Varughese Thomas is part of what has come to be known as the Indian diaspora. Being Indian by birth, born in Kuwait, naturalized in the US, and raised primarily between India and the United States, he often feels as though he is a cultural interloper: “I have always felt outside of the dominant culture in which I exist.” This sense of being the Other has greatly influenced how he views the world, approaches his conceptual concerns, and creates art. He investigates and deconstructs sociopolitical issues from the interstices in personally expressive ways that have been characterized as poetic moments captured in chaotic worlds. His work has been exhibited internationally and nationally in over 75 solo and group exhibitions at museums, galleries, and alternative spaces. Thomas is an Associate Professor of Art at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. He received his BA in Psychology from The University of Texas at Arlington and MFA in Photography/Digital Media from the University of Houston.
Otis Ike (a.k.a. Patrick Bresnan) is a self-taught photographer, video artist, affordable housing activist, and builder. From 2003-2007, Ike worked as a fabricator for notable Mission School artists Clare Rojas and Barry McGee (a.k.a. Twist), aiding in the creation of new work for exhibitions in the United States and abroad. His architectural work includes disaster relief housing on the Gulf Coast, cottages for the homeless in Austin, TX, and structures for his photo and video installations. In 2010, Ike was awarded the top grant from the 2010 Texas Filmmakers Production Fund to finalize post-production of a feature length documentary Vietnam Appreciation Day about Vietnam War re-enactors.
Ivete Lucas is a filmmaker and video artist of Brazilian and Mexican heritage. Her first short film Asthma was nationally released in Mexican movie theaters and shortlisted for the Mexican Academy Awards. Since then she has made several short fiction and documentary films, which have screened at festivals in the United States, Switzerland, Peru, and Mexico. Her video art installations, in which she collaborates with filmmaker/artist Otis Ike, have been displayed in art galleries in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and Philadelphia. Her new project The Curse and the Jubilee was awarded a Texas Filmmakers Production Fund award in 2011. She is currently a fellow of the Mexican Fund for Culture and the Arts.
