Spotlight: Deaf Filmmakers


Aurora Picture Show teamed up with Houston's Illuminations Theatre with The Deaf to produce a program dedicated to the deaf and hard of hearing. Deaf artists have been making films since the early days of moving pictures (see Charles Krauel and Ernest Marshall), facing and overcoming challenges and creating a unique visual language. "Spotlight: Deaf Filmmakers” features short narrative, documentary and animated films and videos made by contemporary deaf artists. Filmmaker Ann Marie Bryan, the first deaf African American artist to graduate with a film degree from NYU’s , creates documentary and narrative films and videos which challenge defined gender roles and sexual preference. Wil Lin, Annie Wright, François Ozon, Lea Rekow and Nicky Glover, and Fatimah Tobing Rony. Featured artists: Joseph Ambrosavage, Nick Gibbons, Mark Greene, Keith Alcorn, W. Joe Hoppe, Tom Pribyl, Scooter Smith, Kathleen Walker, Daniel Loflin, Kathleen Thompson, Robert Hannant, and Devadas George.
