In Flickerlounge: A Season-long cinematic experience

November 5 - December 18
Location: Diverseworks,
1117 East Freeway
FREE

DiverseWorks and Aurora Picture Show are pleased to partner on Flickerlounge, a season-long cinematic experience in the recently refurbished Project Gallery at Diverseworks. In coordination with the visual arts exhibitions, Aurora will present an eclectic lineup of rotating full-length films, shorts and video presentations to accompany the Main Gallery.

In November, DiverseWorks highlights artist Breen Green's residency with installation and sculpture related to his film Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then. Simultaneously in Flickerlounge, Aurora will present short films by artist and filmmaker Sam Green.  Sam Green is a filmmaker whose documentary, The Weather Underground was nominated for an Academy Award in 2004. Flickerlounge will feature some of his short-form documentaries including: Lot 63 Grave C, Pie Fight ’69, Clear Glass and others.  Not only do Sam Green and Brent Green share the same last name, filmmaking talents and spirit, but they will also be presenting separate live cinema performances at the Houston Cinema Arts Society Festival in November.  Be sure to visit the Cinema Arts Festival website for the full details.

SHORT FILMS FROM SAM GREEN INCLUDE:

N Judah 5:30, 2004, 3:25
A melancholy train ride filled with small, rich moments.

Pie Fight ‘69, co-directed with Christian Bruno, 2000, 8:00
The 1969 San Francisco International Film Festival opens on the steps of City Hall, but people walking in are unexpectedly attacked by independent filmmakers with pies. This footage was long lost until the filmmakers found it and made it into a movie in the late 1990s.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, co-directed by Sarah Jacobson, 1999, 10:00
A look at the lost cult classic, a 1981 film about three teenage girls, including Diane Lane and Laura Dern, who start a punk band.

Clear Glasses, 2008, 4:30
Based on Sam Green’s popular film, The Weather Underground this short tells the story of one of the Underground’s members giving Green the plastic glasses he wore when he re-emerged from hiding and went on trial.

Lot 63, Grave C, 2006, 10:00
The name of Meredith Hunter, the man killed in front of the stage at Altamont, has been almost totally forgotten. Green seeks out what may be the final reminder of Hunter's existence, an unmarked grave.

Utopia, Part 3: The World's Largest Shopping Mall, co-directed with Carrie Lozano, 2009, 13:30
More than twice the size of the Mall of America, the South China Mall in Dongguan, China, seems to have it all: gondolas, carnival rides, palm trees, Teletubbies. It has everything.  Everything but people.  This short takes us on a tour of the empty hallways and lonely storefronts of this 7 million square foot failed monument to consumerism.
