Musiqa and Aurora Picture Show greet the New Year with our annual partnership to present Real and Imagined, an evening of contemporary music and experimental film that explores the boundary between reality and fantasy. The program features music by Eve Beglarian, Evan Chambers, Paul Frehner and Theo Loevendie.
Real and Imagined will include Pierre Jalbert’s Visual Abstract, performed live to a film by Jean Detheux, Theo Loevendie’s Six Turkish Folk Songs plus music by Eve Beglarian, Paul Frehner and Evan Chambers, along with two films curated by Aurora Picture Show--Takashi Ishida's "Film of the Sea" and Diego Maclean's "The Art of Drowning," based on a poem by Billy Collins. Conducted by Houston Symphony Assistant Conductor Brett Mitchell.
Real and Imagined will take place on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. in Zilkha Hall of The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Aurora Picture Show Members and Fans can purchase discounted tickets online using the code: "Composers".

Film of the Sea, 2007, 12min, Takashi Ishida
A projector projects a film within the film of a blue monochrome seascape onto a wall. Through the use of stop motion animation, blue paint appears to flow out from the frame of the projected image of the sea. The blue paint level rises to fill the entire room, leaving an empty white screen in opposition. The relationship between the projected image and its painted representation, the negative and positive space within the projected film and the room in which the film is projected, shifts constantly throughout the film like the infinite variations of waves in the sea. The boundaries between film, painting, performance and sculpture are also collapsed as the moving image is realized in the space. The main theme in "Film of the Sea" is repetition. The repetition of the moving images is echoed in the soundtrack. Long silences, three music works on water by the Morris label, simulated film projector noise using voice and water sounds are manipulated and repeated in the composition by ADACHI Tomomi.
The Art of Drowning, 2009, 2min, Diego Maclean
The Art of Drowning is a short animated film directed by Diego Maclean. It is based on a poem by the same name written by American poet Billy Collins. In it we ponder the possibilities of what awaits us at the end of our lives.
