POWERFUL VULNERABLE
Springing from a year-long exploration of vulnerability as creative inspiration in women’s performance and media art works, Aurora Curator Mary Magsamen has selected rarely seen film and video work spanning three generations. Participating artists including Ximena Cuevas, Nina Katchadourian, Thedra Cullar-Ledford, and JooYoung Choi will be in attendance at Thursday and Friday screenings to speak about their work and practice. Finally, Magsamen and Carol Stakenas will co-host a free story circle event for personal on Saturday morning.

Mirroring focuses on ideas of reflection and vulnerability in artists’ personal works using direct confrontation and their own physical bodies. This program includes short films and videos made between the early-1970s and the present. Mexican performance video artist Ximena Cuevas will be here to speak briefly after the screening.

Mythos looks at artists’ reconstructions of memory, identity, and personal mythologies. This program focusses mostly on contemporary works 2007-19, but begins with Maya Deren's classic film At Land from 1944. Visiting artist Nina Katchadourian and Houston artists Thedra Cullar-Ledford and JooYoung Choi will speak briefly after the screening.

All are invited to talk, listen, and build trust. Using a story circle format, participants in this free and open event will share their experiences and be a part of a larger community that values the power of being vulnerable.
