How does the synergy of music and visuals enhance our enjoyment of both? Musiqa and Aurora Picture Show unite to answer this questions with our annual collaborative offering titled Key Images, an evening of contemporary music and experimental film on March 31 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts (800 Bagby Street). The program features an all-piano concert featuring new works by Musiqa composers Karim Al-Zandt, Anthony Brandt, Pierre Jalbert, Marcus Maroney and Rob Smith intertwined with the films, Sensology and One. The films offer lively animated visualizations inspired by musical performances and echo the rhythms and patterns explored in the musical program.

SENSOLOGY, Michel Gagné, 2011, 6:00
A feast for the senses blending improvised music with abstract animation in this 4-year long hand-drawn animation.
Musical performers to be featured will be pianists Timothy Hester, Robert Moehling, Tali Morgulis and Andrew Staupe; flautist Sergio Pallotelli and clarinetist Michael Webster. Works include “Cinque Ricordi” from Marcus Maroney, a suite of reflections on influential composers; “Round Top Trio” from Anthony Brandt which was premiered at the Round Top Festival Institute; “Toccata” from Pierre Jalbert, a short virtuosic work for the piano; “Pattern Preludes, book 2” from Karim Al-Zand, which is part of an ongoing series of short pieces for solo piano; and “Essential Torque” from Rob Smith which includes piano and prerecorded electronic sounds.
