History of Place

Curator Jenny Stark is a recent graduate of California Institute of the Arts. Her film The First Day of The End of The World was screened at Aurora in August 1998, as part of Four California Filmmakers organized by Mark Allen, and at the 1999 SXSW Festival.

Hub City, Bill Brown, 12 mins
In Hub City, Bill Brown examines issues ranging from the immune system to the mysteries of weather patterns while telling the story of his hometown Lubbock and the death of it's genius son Buddy Holly.

Massillon, William E. Jones, 70 mins.
In Massillon, William E. Jones tells the story of his coming out in a small Midwestern town against images of an industrial suburban landscape. Massillon was included in the 1993 Whitney Biennial Exhibition, and was also shown at Los Angeles Filmforum, Pacific Film Archive, New York's Artists Space, and Toronto's Pleasure Dome.

"William Jones' Massillon is that rarity that eluded the queer new wave, a homo road movie in which gay icons are nowhere to be seen. Massillon uses the quiet landscapes of the American Midwest to look at a history disfigured by myths of the family, patriotism, and religion." Lawrence Chua, Artforum
"The film's payoff is its seamless coitus of the personal with the political." Edward Ball, Village Voice

A special performance by Jenny Stark and Bill Brown's one night band Tis What I Love Determines How I Love will follow the screening.
