GENE GENIES: Recent Experimental Works about the Human Genome
Curated by Steve Seid
Our fascination with Man's essential components--his genetic makeup--has been driven by dual desires: the quest to understand our true nature, and the quest to gain power over it. Artists as cultural diviners have had much to say about this pursuit and its sometimes alarming implications. The irreverent works in this program look at provocative issues such as cloning, eugenics, and the manipulation of nature with critical wit, but most poignantly, at the exploitation of our genomic identities. Is there anything to be proven here? Perhaps that we've at least located the gene for visual creativity.
Steve Seid is the Video Curator at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, California. He's inviting everyone to swim in his gene pool after the screening.
