Dust off your slide, video, film or overhead projector and BYOB ("Bring Your Own Beamer") to the Menil Collection. Aurora Picture Show partners with The Menil Collection to celebrate the moving image with Houston's first BYOB event where anyone can bring their own projection device and beam their images, videos or films onto the museum's façade.
BYOB is an idea originated by New York-based artist Rafaël Rozendaal. An acronym for "Bring Your Own Beamer" (projectors are often referred to as "beamers" in Europe), the first edition of BYOB was initiated in 2010 by Anne de Vries & Rafael Rozendaal in Berlin. BYOB is an open source DIY curatorial format which is open to anyone and is meant to create a dynamic collaborative experience with moving images and light.
The idea is simple: Find a place, invite many artists, ask them to bring their projectors. As the BYOB website states, "BYOB is a celebration of the new world we live in and a glimpse of what computing could look like in the future. Today the internet is confined to screens. Tomorrow information will surround us, composing our surfaces, defining our spaces, enmeshing itself with the ether. A moving image is never an object, and when it is coupled with the increased flexibility of portable projection, the realm of experience quickly expands."
BYOB is not just limited to artists, anyone who is interested in moving light, sound and performance is invited to participate. To see examples of how this has been done in other cities, visit http://www.byobworldwide.com
This event is free and open to the public, attendees are encouraged to bring their blankets and picnics.
*Please note that advance registration spots are all filled up at this time. However, we will take walk-ups on the night of the event in first-come, first-served order. We will do our best to accommodate as many people as possible. If you have registered in advance then you will receive email communications with more details. Email us at aurora@aurorapictureshow.org if you have any questions that are not covered by the emails or this webpage.
If you are interested in signing up at the event, here are the guidelines:
Nothing may be pinned, tacked, or taped onto the Menil building.
Please come to the Aurora table and check in with us.
Everyone is permitted one projection per sign up.
That evening you will need to bring your own beamer (video projector, film projector, slide projector, overhead projector), video playing device, cables and extension cord. Please know how to hook up your equipment - we will not be able to provide technical assistance.
Due to concerns with sound and power, we ask that you do not bring speakers. We are asking that your videos be presented without sound - there would be just too much sound overlapping if everyone had sound and speakers!
The Menil will provide access to power sockets
Please keep content family friendly so that all ages may enjoy the evening.
