Aurora Picture Show is proud to announce an exciting new collaboration with American Festival for the Arts
(AFA). This partnership brings student composers and student filmmakers together to learn the art of film scoring while enrolled in each organization’s acclaimed summer programs: the AFA Summer Music Conservatory and the Aurora Filmmaking Boot Camp. This partnership is the first of its kind in Houston, combining the collective resources of the AFA and Aurora Faculty. AFA Faculty member and film composer Richard Ford and Aurora’s Media Arts Education Manager and filmmaker Camilo Gonzalez will guide the students through the collaborative process of creating a film with original music.
“Film music is one of the most exciting career prospects for young composers. With the additional collaboration of Aurora Picture Show, along with our long-standing collaboration with Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy, our student composers will be given the opportunity to work with two world-class organizations. We are thrilled to be able to provide this outstanding and unique program to Houston area high school students who are interested in writing music,” says Dr. Michael Remson, AFA Executive & Artistic Director.
Sarah Stauder, Aurora’s Executive Director remarks, "This partnership will result in a unique opportunity for Houston area youth to gain exposure to the multidisciplinary nature of the making of moving image art. Aurora Picture Show is honored to work with AFA, an organization that shares our dedication to inspiring and engaging the next generation of artists in our community."
The completed films with scores will be shown at the AFA World Premieres Concert at 7pm on Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Houston Ballet Center for Dance (601 Preston Street, Houston, TX 77002). This performance will be free and open to the public.
Aurora offers one need-based scholarship to this camp. For details and an application, please check out the Aurora Boot Camp Scholarship Fund webpage
American Festival for the Arts (AFA) offers Houston’s finest music programs for youth — programs that make musical development and accomplishment a vehicle for personal learning and growth. Each year, AFA presents its signature Summer Music Conservatory and a variety of outstanding year-round experiences including the Houston Girls Chorus, the Chamber Music Academy and the Composer Institute. In addition, AFA’s Community Partnerships bring the best of its curriculum to area schools and community centers, including KIPP Academy and the Center for Hearing and Speech. Many of these initiatives are offered in collaboration with Houston’s world-class arts presenters including Houston Grand Opera HGOco, Da Camera of Houston’s Young Artist Program and Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy. Taken together, AFA serves nearly one thousand young people every year and presents dozens of free performances and outreach concerts throughout the greater Houston area.
