BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer)
Co-presented with The Menil Collection
Friday, May 1, 8PM
Location: Menil Collection Front Lawn, 1533 Sul Ross
Free Admission

We had so much fun last year we decided to do it again! Once again, Aurora Picture Show invites you to dust off your slide, video, film or overhead projector and BYOB ("Bring Your Own Beamer"). Aurora Picture Show partners with The Menil Collection on Friday, May 1st at 8PM to celebrate the moving image by inviting everyone to bring their own projection device and beam their images, videos or films onto the museum's façade (1533 Sul Ross).

BYOB is an idea originated by New York-based artist Rafaël Rozendaal. An acronym for "Bring Your Own Beamer" (projectors are often referred to as "beamers" in Europe), the first edition of BYOB was initiated in 2010 by Anne de Vries & Rafael Rozendaal in Berlin. BYOB is an open source DIY curatorial format which is open to anyone and is meant to create a dynamic collaborative experience with moving images and light.

The idea is simple: Find a place, invite many artists, ask them to bring their projectors.  As the BYOB website states, "BYOB is a celebration of the new world we live in and a glimpse of what computing could look like in the future. Today the internet is confined to screens. Tomorrow information will surround us, composing our surfaces, defining our spaces, enmeshing itself with the ether. A moving image is never an object, and when it is coupled with the increased flexibility of portable projection, the realm of experience quickly expands."

BYOB is not just limited to artists, anyone who is interested in moving light, sound and performance is invited to participate. To see examples of how this has been done in other cities, visit

This event is free and open to the public, attendees are encouraged to bring their blankets and picnics. Beamers are asked to register in advance for a timeslot and to receive email communications regarding logistics. Registration is below.
