NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE:
UN RÊVE PLUS LONG QUE LA NUIT

Aurora Picture Show and the Menil Collection co-present French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s rarely seen 1976 feature film, Un rêve plus long que la nuit (A Dream Longer Than The Night). An often-overlooked work in the prolific, multidisciplinary artist’s career, Un rêve is a phantasmagoric feminist fairy tale in which a young girl comes face to face with a friendly dragon, a beautiful bird-man, and a witch who grants her wish to become a grown-up. The precocious Camélia searches for the meaning of life, death, and love in increasingly strange scenarios–including an absurd factory, a brothel where Saint Phalle plays the role of madam, and a battlefield with phallus cannons. In French with English subtitles. Mature content.

“A modern surrealist film masterpiece.” – Amy Taubin,
Artforum

This program has been organized in collaboration with Arielle de Saint Phalle, and in conjunction with the Menil Collection’s exhibition, Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s, on view through Sunday, January 23, 2022.
